Australia

Required clothes

Shorts, t-shirts etc are generally adequate for summer days but warmer clothes should be carried for temperature variations and cool evenings. Warm clothes and a hat are needed in winter and waterproofs are advisable all year, particularly in highland areas.

Tasmania

Tasmania is a separate island located 240km south of Melbourne across Bass Strait. Roughly heart-shaped, Tasmania is 296km long, ranging from 315km wide in the north to 70km in the south. The island has a diverse landscape comprising rugged mountains (snow capped in winter) and lakes, dense rainforest, beautiful coastline and tranquil countryside. Approximately 40 per cent of the state is made up of National Parks, half of this area being World Heritage Listed temperate wilderness on the west coast.

Tasmania has a similar climate to southern Australia, with warm, dry summers and cool wet winters. However, the weather in Tassie is more changeable, with some areas (eg Hobart) receiving considerably less rainfall than others. Most of the rainfall is in the mountainous west of the island. It often snows in the highland areas during winter.
