ITINERARY
Day 1 - Alice Springs to Kata Tjuta & Uluru
Depart Alice Springs for the Outback Camel Farm where you will have an opportunity to ride a camel (at own expense). Journey onto Uluru (Ayers Rock) enjoying the sights of Mt Connor and the unique scenery along the way. After pick-ups and lunch at Yulara, we explore the wonder of Kata Tjuta (Olgas) and hike the Valley of the Winds. We return to enjoy a glass of sparkling wine whilst watching the desert sun set over Uluru. After a delicious dinner, we enjoy some stargazing, before curling up for the night in our deluxe safari accommodation. (LD)
Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) - this 'place of many heads' has 36 domes that make up a site of even greater cultural significance to the Aborigines than Uluru. There are two permitted walks in Kata Tjuta (no climbing is allowed as requested by the traditional owners), the Mt Olga pass, which is around 3km return and the Valley of the Winds which is approx 8km return.
The Aboriginal tribe Anangu believe that Mt Olga is the home of the snake Wanambi who, during the rainy season, stays curled up in a waterhole on the summit. In the dry season he moves down to the gorge below. He also uses the various caves on the mountain. The hairs of his beard are the dark lines on the eastern side of the rock and his breath is the wind that blows through the gorge.
The domed rocks on the eastern side are ancestors known as mice women, two large rocks near the end of Mt Olga are food prepared for them.
Rocks in the south west are where the posionous snake men, the Liru, make their camp before setting out to attack the carpet snakes at Uluru.
The pointed rocks on the east is Malu, a kangaroo man who is dying of wounds inflicted by dingoes. Malu leans on a rock which is his sister Mulumura, a lizard woman, who cardles him in her arms.
An early start for one of the highlights of the tour - the Uluru sunrise. Enjoy a walk around the base exploring the mysterious formations and Aboriginal art sites while watching the changing light on the desert or you may choose to climb the rock. A visit to the Cultural Centre offers the chance to view and purchase Aboriginal arts and crafts. After lunch we depart for Kings Canyon for our overnight safari accommodation and a delicious camp oven dinner. (BLD)
Climb and explore Kings Canyon and view the Amphitheatre, the Lost City, the picturesque Garden of Eden and the breathtaking North & South Walls. Then take time to relax and refresh in the cooling waterhole (summer only). After lunch we depart for Alice Springs or Yulara depending on your finishing point. (BL)
