El Malpais National Monument. This 114,277-acre gem is in west-central New Mexico. El Malpais, which translates to the badlands, is a spectacular volcanic area with portions formed as recently as 1,000 years ago. It features ice caves, lava flows, cinder cones, pressure ridges and complex lava tube systems.
