Alaska Scenic Byways

This classic self-drive provides you with the best of Alaska's scenic highways and features three of Alaska's spectacular national parks: Wrangell-St Elias, Denali and Kenai Fjords National Parks. Your adventure begins in Anchorage through spectacular mountains, serene landscapes and breathtaking coastal scenery . Included is a wildlife tour along Denali National Park access road, where you will search for grizzly bears, wolves, Dall sheep, and moose. You might even have the chance to see the impressive peak of Mt. McKinley, the highest mountain in North America.

Typical Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Anchorage.
Day 2 After a comprehensive briefing in your hotel collect your rental car and take the scenic Glenn Highway to Glennallen / Copper Center area. Visit the Alaska Native Heritage Center, Independence Mine and the beautiful Hatcher Pass and Matanuska Glacier. Overnight in Glenallen.
Day 3 Drive through the Wrangell Mountains to the end of the unpaved McCarthy Road. After many scenic spots for taking pictures and picnicing you will park the car at the end of the road and walk across the footbridge over Kennicott River to your hotel for an overnight stop.
Day 4 Take a guided walking tour through Kennicott, a ghost town of a copper mine. A flightseeing tour is also available which is well worth taking for its spectacular views over the glaciers and mountains.
Day 5 Drive south to Valdez, stopping off along the way at the Worthington Glacier.
Day 6 Spend the day in Valdez with an optional day cruise into Prince William Sound. Kayaking tours are also available.
Day 7 Travel back north along the Richardson Highway past serene lakes and forests to join the Denali Highway and Parks Highway to Denali National Park.
Day 8 Spend the day exploring Denali National Park, home to bears, caribou, moose and mountain sheep. A 6-8 hour bus tour is provided to tour the park as access is limited to cars. A picnic lunch is included.
Day 9 An easy drive from Denali National Park to Talkeetna with views of the Alaska Range of mountains including Mount McKinley. Overnight in Talkeetna.
Day 10 Continue south on the Parks Highway past Wasilla where you can visit the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Headquarters and watch a sled dog demonstration. Continue south to Anchorage and then along one of the most scenic highways in Alaska along the Turnagain Arm for an overnight stop in Seward.
Day 11 Take an optional boat trip into the Kenai Fjords National Park where you may see sea l,ions, seals, puffins and humpback whales. We also recommend a visit to the Alaska Sealife Center. Overnight in Seward.
Day 12 Cruise the Kenai Peninsula to Homer, enjoying the scenery along the Cook Inlet coastline.
Day 13 Enjoy a full day in Homer with optional activities such as water taxi rides into Kachemak Bay, Halibut fishing charters or a bear viewing flight safari.
Day 14 Drive back to Anchorage, stopping off along the way to enjoy hiking opportunities if you wish.
Day 15 Depart from Anchorage.

Weather
In general, summer and early fall are the sunniest and warmest seasons. Alaska's weather is known for its unpredictability. As you travel north summer days and winter nights are longer. The maximum average daylight in southern Alaska is 19:16 hrs. Winter is by far the longest season with bitterly cold temperatures. Summer temperatures in the south range from an average low of 38 to an average high of 65.
