Alaska Highlights

This self-drive adventure takes you far north into the dramatic landscape of Alaska! Your adventure begins in Anchorage through spectacular mountains, serene landscapes and breathtaking coastal scenery. Included is a ferry cruise through Prince William Sound and a wilderness tour into Denali National Park . Keep an eye out for grizzly bears, Dall sheep, moose, whales, sea lions, seals, and other amazing spectacles of nature on this Alaskan tour.

Typical Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Anchorage, Alaska and transfer independently to your hotel.
Day 2

In the morning you will have a comprehensive tour briefing in the hotel. Afterwards pick up your rental car and begin your driving vacation! Take Glenn Highway north to Wasilla. Points of interest along the way are the Alaska Native Heritage Center and the Eklutna Indian Village. A possible side trip may be to the small gold mining community of Talkeetna, famous for its special charm. Continue on Parks Highway north towards Denali National Park and be surrounded by towering mountains, wide valleys, roaring rivers, and rippling streams. Overnight in Denali National Park.

Day 3 This morning enjoy a 7-hour Tundra Wilderness Tour into Denali National Park (approximately 55miles / 88km into the park). The park is inhabited by lots of different animal species. With some luck you may see bears, caribou, moose, sheep, wolves, and a variety of birds. You might also see Mt. McKinley if the weather is clear that day.  A snack lunch is included. After the tour, continue on Parks Highway north to Fairbanks, the hub of Alaska's interior, located less than 200 km south of the Arctic Circle. Accompanied by incredible forest, magnificent alpine vistas and startling mountain landscape, you will drive through the communities of Healy, Nenana and Ester, an old mining camp. Overnight in Fairbanks.
Day 4 Follow the Richardson & Alaska Highways east towards Tok until you reach the Delta Junction. Just outside of Fairbanks you will drive by the North Pole, home of North America 's Santa Claus! In Delta Junction take the Richardson Highway and drive south towards Paxson / Valdez. Overnight in Glennallen.
Day 5 Today you will drive the spectacular Richardson Highway further south. Part of the route parallels the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. Weather permitting you will see incredible views of the St Elias Mountains. Drive by Worthington Glacier and through Keystone Canyon with its amazing waterfalls for a visual treat. Overnight in Valdez.
Day 6 Leave Valdez in the early morning on the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry and travel through beautiful Prince William Sound. Look for bears, humpback and killer whales, and pass by the Columbia Glacier, one of the largest and most magnificent tidewater glaciers in the state. Upon arrival in Whittier drive through the new Whittier-Portage Tunnel, a one-lane tunnel (open to traffic during certain hours only). You may wish to make a stop at the Portage Glacier and Visitor Center. Then drive Seward Highway through scenic landscape to Seward. Overnight in Seward.
Day 7 This morning you have some free time before you travel back to Anchorage. You may wish to enjoy a wildlife and glacier cruise into scenic Kenai Fjords National Park. Overnight in Anchorage.
Day 8 Depart from Anchorage.

Weather
In general, summer and early fall are the sunniest and warmest seasons. Alaska's weather is known for its unpredictability. As you travel north summer days and winter nights are longer. The maximum average daylight in southern Alaska is 19:16 hrs. Winter is by far the longest season with bitterly cold temperatures. Summer temperatures in the south range from an average low of 38 to an average high of 65.
